Overplaying JJ then missing a possible bluff?

Postby DODGYKEN » Sun Dec 26, 2004 5:56 am

Here's a hand I played last night which I messed up. However, I think I messed up in 2 areas. Firstly, I overplayed my hand on the flop. I went for a check-raise because I thought this would slow my opponent down if he was on AK/AQ. I also thought it would give me more information about his hand; if I had simply bet out on the flop he may have raised me with overcards (such as AK). When I was 3-bet on the flop I was pretty sure he had QQ-AA and I made a loose call looking for my set.

On the turn it occurred to me that if he did have QQ or KK then perhaps I could bet him off the hand. He seemed a fairly decent player, although I hadn't seen that much of him, so I decided to bet out. When he flat-called this I thought he probably did have QQ or KK (although he may have AA and be slow-playing). Having bet this turn, when the river came a K I think I should've bet out again. If I got raised I can safely lay my hand down. There's (virtually) no way I'm winning a showdown. I think a bluff could've worked here as I bet the turn and was only called, and now another high card has fallen - if he did have QQ he must surely now be scared of being beaten. Although he probably would have called this river bet, the chance that he might not have would've made it worthwhile I think (there was no other way to win the pot!).

What do you guys think? Should I have check-folded the turn?

Here's the hand:

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: DODGYKEN is UTG with [Jc], [Js].
DODGYKEN raises, UTG+1 3-bets, MP1 folds, MP2 folds, MP3 folds, CO folds, Button folds, SB folds, BB folds, DODGYKEN calls.

Flop: (7.50 SB) [2c], [5c], [2s] (2 players)
DODGYKEN checks, UTG+1 bets, DODGYKEN raises, UTG+1 3-bets, DODGYKEN calls.

Turn: (6.75 BB) [Ah] (2 players)
DODGYKEN bets, UTG+1 calls.

River: (8.75 BB) [Kc] (2 players)
DODGYKEN checks, UTG+1 bets, DODGYKEN calls.

Final Pot: 10.75 BB

Results in white below:
DODGYKEN has Jc Js (two pair, jacks and twos).
UTG+1 has Qd Qh (two pair, queens and twos).
Outcome: UTG+1 wins 10.75 BB.

Thanks,

Martin
